Titmouse , also called tit, plural titmice , small cheery-voiced nonmigratory woodland bird. Along with the chickadees , titmice make up the family Paridae order Passeriformes , with approximately 55 species throughout the world, mostly in the Northern Hemisphere. Bold and athletic, the titmice are among the best-loved visitors to bird feeders. Although they range in size from Despite their small size, they are extremely athletic and hardy. Many live in the far north and are able to endure bitterly cold winters , in part thanks to their strategy of storing food in bark crevices or holes and remembering the locations for later retrieval. Special leg muscles enable them to hang upside down to feed, allowing them to feast on items such as insect eggs that might be missed by less-agile birds.
The Varied Tit is commonly found in open mixed forests of broad-leafed evergreens in lowland areas as well as mountainous regions, but it can also be seen in parks with concentrated green spaces. However, other than Japan its distribution is limited to the southern part of the Korean Peninsula, Taiwan and so on. Just like the Japanese Tit, the Varied Tit perches on a branch as it eats seeds and insects, collects moss to build its nest in a tree hollow, and joins mixed-species flocks in autumn and winter. Its song has a slower tempo than the Japanese Tit.
Ever since starting the live cameras in my backyard in Ohio, I have always felt comfortable helping viewers identify birds they have never seen before. But then we added a live bird feeder camera from Germany to the site. And then another one from the United Kingdom. Did I mention the incredible feeding station in the Czech Republic? But I had no idea how to answer since I was clueless about the common birds that visit feeders in Europe.
