For the event, each Scout gets a derby kit which includes a block of wood, four nails and four wheels. With that, they must create a race car. The task is no easy feat. Many Scouts will work on the car with an adult mentor, known as an Akalah, and spend several hours on the project in order to get the car just right. Matthew Vielhauer, Cub Master of Pack , creates cars each year with his sons Gaige, 11, and Aiden, 9, and says that if you include design concept, cutting of the car, sanding, painting, polishing axels and wheels, assembling the car, waxing and adding weight appropriately they invest approximately hours per car.
